What Your Bloodwork Really Says About Your Fatigue, Weight Gain, and Gut Health: A Functional Medicine Guide
April 10, 2025
Are you dealing with relentless fatigue, stubborn weight gain, bloating, SIBO, or an autoimmune condition?
Have you been told your lab tests are “normal,” yet you still feel far from your best?
You’re not alone—and you’re not imagining things.
Standard blood tests often miss early signs of dysfunction, leaving you frustrated without answers. But with functional blood chemistry analysis, we can detect subtle imbalances and uncover the real root causes of your symptoms—before they spiral into chronic conditions.
As a Functional Medicine Dietitian, I interpret labs through an optimal health lens, not just a disease-focused one. Below, I’ll walk you through the top blood markers that can reveal issues with energy, metabolism, digestion, hormones, and immune function.
🔬 What Your Bloodwork Can Reveal About Your Health
1️⃣ Chronic Fatigue & Energy Imbalances
If you’re always tired, your bloodwork might hold the answers.
Iron Panel (Serum Iron, Ferritin, TIBC, % Saturation): Low ferritin (<40 ng/mL) may suggest iron deficiency, while high ferritin can signal inflammation or iron overload—often linked to autoimmune issues.
Hemoglobin A1c & Fasting Glucose: A glucose level <80 mg/dL or A1c >5.6% may indicate blood sugar instability, contributing to energy crashes, brain fog, and adrenal stress.
Vitamin B12 & MCV: A high MCV (>92 fL) may signal B12 or folate deficiency—key causes of fatigue and nerve dysfunction.
2️⃣ Thyroid Dysfunction (Even with “Normal” TSH)
Thyroid issues are often underdiagnosed. I experienced this firsthand!
TSH: Optimal range is 1.0–3.5 μIU/mL. A high TSH may indicate hypothyroidism; a low one may point to adrenal stress or hyperthyroidism.
Free T3 & Free T4: These show if your body’s producing active thyroid hormones. Suboptimal Free T3 (<2.5) or Free T4 (<1.0) can cause low metabolism, hair loss, and poor focus.
Reverse T3 (rT3): Elevated rT3 often points to chronic stress or nutrient deficiencies, which block effective thyroid function.
3️⃣ Gut Health Issues: SIBO, Candida & Parasites
Your gut and blood markers are more connected than you think.
Eosinophils & Monocytes: Elevated levels (>3% and >7%, respectively) can indicate hidden gut infections or parasites.
Total Protein & Albumin: Low levels may reflect poor protein absorption or leaky gut.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Low ALP (<70 U/L) is often linked to zinc deficiency, which is essential for gut repair and immune strength.
4️⃣ Autoimmune & Inflammatory Conditions
Autoimmune disorders are rising—and early blood detection is key.
C-Reactive Protein (Hs-CRP): Levels above 1.0 mg/L suggest systemic inflammation, common in autoimmune conditions.
White Blood Cell Count (WBC): Low WBC (<4.0) may signal immune suppression or chronic infection. High WBC can indicate acute infections or stress.
Vitamin D (25-OH D3): Deficiency (<40 ng/mL) is tied to inflammation, poor immunity, and autoimmune risk.
✅ Why Functional Lab Interpretation Is a Game Changer
Traditional ranges catch disease—not dysfunction. Functional lab analysis helps you act before things get worse. For example:
A ferritin of 15 ng/mL is “normal” but may still cause exhaustion.
A fasting glucose of 99 mg/dL could indicate insulin resistance.
A Free T3 of 2.0 might be technically okay—but you’re still gaining weight or feeling foggy.
